May 17, 2020 (IANSlife) Amidst the Covid-19 Crisis, veterinarians from Wildlife SOS have provided life saving medical treatment to an injured hyena, who was trapped in a deadly wire snare on the outskirts of Delhi.

Haryana Forest Department officials, who were alerted that a hyena was on the brink of death trapped in a wire snare near a field in the Gurugram’s Sohna area later brought the animal for medical treatment to the Wildlife SOS Transit Facility located in Gurugram, with snare wires tightly wound around the helpless animal’s neck and mouth, causing it to suffocate.

Dr Abhishek Kumar Singh, Wildlife Veterinary Officer, Wildlife SOS, said, “The hyena was severely injured by the wire snare and every minute was precious so the animal would not suffocate to death. We were worried about internal haemorrhage. We treated the animal for deep lacerations and profuse bleeding from tongue and mouth. The snare could have been fatal. The hyena is currently under observation and we are administering painkillers and antibiotics.”

Kartick Satyanarayan, CEO and Co-founder of Wildlife SOS, said, “Presence of hyenas in the Delhi NCR area is an indication that these animals still exist. Sadly the threat of snare traps is very real. Despite being illegal and banned, they are used by poachers to kill wild animals. Wild animals like leopards, tigers, hyenas, sloth bears, wild boar etc fall victims to snares. Hyenas are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. I’m thankful that the Forest Officers were able to bring the animal for treatment and our veterinary doctors were able to save the hyena’s life.”
