March 26, 2022 (IANSlife) We are all aware that breakfast is an important part of our daily routine. It is the meal that provides us with energy and allows our bodies and minds to focus on our tasks and surroundings. When it comes to eating, Ayurveda has one fundamental principle: listen to your body and eat accordingly. What is effective for you may not be effective for someone else. An Ayurvedic breakfast, on the other hand, is always warm.

According to Ayurveda, our digestive fire, or Agni, is weak in the morning. We need warm meals in the morning to properly kickstart our digestion in order to fuel this Agni. A warm breakfast provides nutrients and energy that a dry or cold meal does not. Eating cold meals in the morning can make you feel sluggish and drained for the rest of the day. It can also lead to weight gain and a constant state of hunger.

The concept of vata, pitta, and kapha, also known as the three doshas, is central to Ayurveda. They represent out-of-balance energy in the body. After consulting with an Ayurvedic doctor, it is highly recommended that you tailor your diet to your dominant dosha. Ayurveda does have general rules for a breakfast detox that you can follow every day:

  • Drink warm water right after waking up.
  • Move your body for at least 10 to 15 minutes. This allows for movement for the mind and body.
  • Only use seasonal produce- don’t eat fruits or vegetables that are grown out of season. Use natural foods.
  • Chew slowly and eat till you are 80 percent full. Always leave some space in your stomach, do not stuff your stomach with food.
  • Eat a warm meal in the morning. It will help your body feel light through the day.
  • Eat fruits everyday.
  • Eat with gratitude and mindfulness. Our mindset when we eat greatly affects our digestion of the food.

Here are two detox breakfast recipes you can make:

Daliya (Ayurvedic Porridge)

  • Daliya is made of cracked/broken wheat. This wheat is coarse and rich in fibre. Daliya is amazing for your gut health and cleans the body from the inside out.
  • Add ghee or coconut oil to your coarse wheatand heat it.
  • Pour double the amount of milk and let it soak for a few minutes.
  • Season the Daliya with turmeric, cinnamon, ginger or cardamom. You can also add dry fruits or seeds to your Daliya.
  • Eat it warm and mindfully.

Golden Milk

  • Golden milk has been made for generations in India. It is beneficial for you, because it contains anti-inflammatory properties that boost your immunity and health. This milk is helpful for digestion especially in the morning.
  • Boil coconut oil, ghee, grated ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and coconut milk together. Drink it while it is warm.
