February  5, 2022 (IANSlife) Christie's presents over 40 works from The Visionary Collection of Mahinder and Sharad Tak as part of the live auction, South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art Including Works from the Collection of Mahinder and Sharad Tak, on March 23, 2022, during New York's annual Asian Art Week.

From the 1st to the 6th of February, a selection of highlights from the collection will be on display at Christie's London, followed by private viewings in Mumbai. All auction lots will then be displayed as part of Christie's Asian Art Week preview in New York from March 18 to 22.

"We are delighted to host the preview of our upcoming South Asian modern and contemporary sale at Christie's Mumbai," said Sonal Singh, Managing Director of Christie's India. This season's collection is incredible, and it gives me great pleasure to host Christie's Mumbai's first preview since the outbreak began, with such significant and exceptional works. We look forward to welcoming back our collectors, art lovers, and audience members with an exhibition that exemplifies the collecting passion."

Mahinder and Sharad Tak have spent decades showcasing India's rich cultural heritage to their American neighbours and friends, connecting her past and present and laying a strong foundation for the future. Mahinder would visit art galleries on her annual trips back to India, always buying one or two pieces for her home. However, it wasn't until a few years later, in the early 1980s, when she met artist Maqbool Fida Husain on one of his trips to the United States, that her interest grew into a passion and she began to collect Indian art seriously.

The Taks created a new global audience for South Asian art and culture by making their home one of the first platforms for it in America. As a result, many years before access to other cultures became as widespread and instantaneous as it is today, they were instrumental in developing and sustaining an appreciation for South Asian heritage in the country.

The Tak Collection's breadth and depth reflect the friendships Mahinder and Sharad have formed with a number of artists, as well as their long-standing interest in their South Asian heritage. Leading highlights from their upcoming March sale include Bhupen Khakhar's The Banyan Tree (1994) and Manjit Bawa's Untitled (Devi) (1993), as well as major paintings by South Asian modernists such as Maqbool Fida Husain, who painted a portrait of Mahinder, Sayed Haider Raza, Francis Newton Souza, Jagdish Swaminathan, Jogen Chowdhury, Rameshwar Broota, and Arpita Singh.
