September 24, 2020 (IANSlife) Gopalkrishna Gandhi, former Governor of West Bengal, has been appointed as a Life Trustee of the India International Centre (IIC) for the vacancy caused by the demise of Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan.
Born in 1945, Gandhi joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1968 and has held various important positions in the state of Tamil Nadu and at the National Capital. He served as Secretary to the then Vice President of India, Shri Venkataraman (in 1985) and as Joint Secretary to President Venkataraman (1987-1992).
Post setting up the Nehru Centre of the High Commission of India, London in 1992, he became its first Director. He has also served as India’s High Commissioner to South Africa (1996-97) and Secretary to President K R Narayanan (1997-2000). He was India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka (2000-2002) and Ambassador to Norway (2002-2004).
Gandhi, who has authored several books was conferred a Doctorate of Laws honoris causa by The University of Natal, South Africa in 1999.
